A fine needlework sampler, showing the alphabet in capitals, followed by the alphabet in lower case and then by numerals, with other decorative work. Bottom row shows the maker as "Ruth Neeve 1794".
Hand-written in ink on the back of the old lining paper is "This sampler was worked by Ruth Neeve, afterwards wife of Joseph Carrington in the Queens Bays & of Backwell's surgeons."
The Queen's Bays is another name for the 2nd Dragoon Guards. The regiment was first raised in 1685 and, after various name changes, was renamed the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays) in 1767 after they started to ride only bay horses.
