Gypsy Encampment in the New Forest, Hampshire, by William Shayer Senior (1787-1879). Signed and dated 1842.

William Shayer was a self taught artist, who lived in Southampton and painted mostly in Hampshire and the New Forest. He painted landscapes and animals in two broad themes: woodland scences with gypsies, rustic folk, and animals; coastal scences with boats and fisherfolk.

He was a member of the Royal Academy (1820 - 1843) and the British Institute.

His son (William J) was also a painter.
