Exceptional Early Oak Coffer, Late 16th Century (English, circa 1570 to 1600)

A superb and very rare early oak coffer with elaborate carved decoration to front. Raised carved figure of Archangel Michael central to one-piece front panel depicting the angel’s wings outstretched, with dragons to either side.

Front top and bottom rails, and front side uprights also elaborately carved. Very unusual shaped front apron.

Two panel sides, with similarly carved top and bottom rails. Three panel top. Four panel back with raised fielded panels.

Fantastic rich dark colour and wonderful patina.

Original working lock with key.

Standing on original tall stile legs.

Hinges replaced a very long time ago.

Interior candle box with later incised line and punch stamped decoration to lid.
